Keep in mind when looking after Comet

Mixing comet goldfish into community tank

As said above, comet goldfish has slim body shape with agile swimming ability. If you’re the experienced aquarium hobbyist, you may be able to expect which fish to avoid mixing and which should be fine by now.

However, some of you may be completely new to aquarium and don’t worry we will explain now.

Firstly, fancy type of goldfish such as ryukin, ranchu, pearl scale, etc is not ideal fish to accompany with comet goldfish in general speaking. Reason being as aforementioned that comet swims quite fast while those fancy type fantail goldfish swim rather slow.

But how come it’s not good to mix together?

This is because when you feed them, comet goldfish will come faster than others and will take more food in the end. Since they eat more than other fantail type, it affects to growth rate in general speaking.

There is also a possibility that comet will play with those who swim slowly and that can lead to injure tails, body, eyes etc etc.

But you’d still like to mix with comet goldfish?

How about mixing single tail wakin type goldfish that is similar size to comet goldfish you already have.

Having all said that, fish has its own mind and individual characteristic will differ each other so you will have to check if new fish will accompany with your fish or not. Some will be placid to any kind of fish while some others can be vicious to anyone they see.

Not only limited to comet goldfish in general but it is easier to keep same type and avoid mixing other types.

Aquarium size

This issue refers to not only goldfish but almost all ornemanetal fish. you should house your fish in large enough size of aquarium so that your fish do not have to suffer by rapid deterioration of water quality as well as less stress to dwell in.

If it doesn’t come to your mind, think in this way and hopefully this will ring a bell.

  1. Your hands are covered with mud and now you want to wash your dirty hands. There is water in small bowl beside you so you wash your dirty hands in that small bowl.
  2. Your hands are covered with mud and now you want to wash your dirty hands. There is full of water in your bath-tab and you wash your dirty hands in there.

Now, after washing your hands in both situations, which do you think the water is dirtier (concentrated)?

Small bowl, right?

Same thing in aquarium so bigger aquarium is a lot easier to keep its quality longer.

On the other hand, there are people who recommend starting with small aquarium. Main reason is to control fish growth and some people want to keep fish size in small as long as possible. Aquarium size and growth rate affects to all other fish as well so fish will grow faster when you have bigger fish tank or pond.

Life span for comet goldfish

Although fish life span is depending on your aquarium environment and how you look after, some people live with same goldfish for over 40 years! That’s right, 40 years!!!

you can’t believe it? You can check out the proof.

You may know goldfish live longer than other demosticated fish but they can easily outlive dog and cat. They can be with you for almost half century. Isn’t this amazing?
