Variety of types
There are many types of betta being categorized by length, shape of its tail and body colourations. We will talk about those types of betta in this page.
Veil-tail
Most poplar and basic type si this veil-tail. if you’re new to aquarium hobby and looking to keep betta as of your aquarium pet, we recommend this veil-tail.
- Affordable
- Tough
Compared to other type of betta, veil-tail can be purchased with reasonably affordable price and they’re available at most aquarium shops. Hence, there is more chance that you will find your preferred colour betta. Red, blue and green types of colours are widely available but you will sometimes find white or some other unusual colour veil-tail if you’re lucky.
Generally speaking, they’re tougher than other fancy type betta so if you’re either not sure how well you can look after but would like to try fighting fish and/or simply want tough and colourful fighting fish and don’t mind tail types, this veil-tail is right fish for you.
Crown-tail
Crown-tail has extended rays on all of its fins which resemble crown in appearance. They’re slightly more expensive than veil-tail but their unique shape of tails are very beautiful and great for ornamental purpose as well.
Half Moon
Half moon is classified by its tail fully expanded 180 degrees when betta flared. it should form complete “D” shape in order to be characterized as is. Despite popularity of half moon, they’re prone to bite tails and damage them.
It may be due to their large fins compared to other types of fighting fish. Again, they’re very popular but they can be one of hard fighting fish to keep their delicate tail at most condition and further breeding.
Its colour patterns are also important and will reflect to its price by colour types and how vivid and beautiful they are.
Super delta & delta tail
Super delta tail is very similar to half moon but they don’t have tails that expand 180 degrees when flared while delta tail expands to about 120 degrees. Although both super delta tail and delta tail don’t have large fins like half moon, they still do have beautiful tails and they are often cheaper than half moon.
If you’re considering to keep fancy type fighting fish but not possible to take half moon, they can be great choice instead.
Colour Types
We’re so lucky that there are variety of colour and colour patterns available for fighting fish. We see common ones like red, blue, green, marble, yellow to rarer colours such as black and white.
Solid
Solid colour is what exactly you can imagine, just one colour from nose to tail.
Bi-colour and Cambodian
When fighting fish named with “bi-colour” it means that their fins are translucent and body is one solid colour. Cambodian type is on the other hand, has solid colour on its fins while its body is pale.
Butterfly
Fighting fish will be classified as butterfly when its body has a solid colour and its fins are divided into solid colour from the base of fins while the edge is either transparent or white.
More types will come in future
Other than what’s covered in here, there are full moon, giant plakat, spade tail, half sun etc etc. Breeders in Thailand or other countries are trying very hard to improve various types of breeds with great colourations and patterns.
And in this process, they will sometimes come across with new strains and will eventually unveil into the market so look forward to what’s coming to store shelves in near future.
