What is Goldfish?
Goldfish is domesticated aquarium fish
Goldfish has numerous colour variation from red, white, black, yellow, orange, brown and mixture of those multi colour as well as number of body shapes. You will see goldfish pretty much in any aquarium shops but did you know since when goldfish has been existing?
If you’re the goldfish enthusiast, you may know its history but most may not know. Goldfish is a domesticated freshwater fish originate from Carassius Which is selectively bred in ancient China more than 1500 years ago.
Not expensive but tough and beautiful
Although there are fancier types of goldfish fetching higher prices, common types of goldfish are not expensive at all as you may already found out when you visited aquarium shops. And yes they are colourful and beautiful doesn’t matter which type.
They are also tough as their ancestor Carassius is very robust in water condition and tolerates wide range temperature and goldfish inherits those characteristics.
Of course there are delicate types of goldfish (more for fancy types), most goldfish will tolerate temperature and water quality more than that of tropical fish.
Many types to choose from
There are two main groups.
- “Straight-tails”. this includes common goldfish such as Comets and Shubunkins which are multi-coloured.
- “Fantails”. Goldfish which have a large tail separated into four lobes, two lower lobes spreading laterally while top lobes close together but preferably deeply split in centre. This type includes normal fantails, Ryukins, Orandas, Black Moors, Lionheads, Ranchus and Pearl Scale etc.
Key points
When you first purchase goldfish, you may not know which goldfish to choose as your first goldfish. If you’re in that case, firstly ask shop staff.
They should be able to provide you some good advises.
If you like to have few different types, consider choosing similar sizes.
And make sure all goldfish will be fed enough by feeding fish food into few different sopts.
